The Sumo Museum

Sumo Museum

History

The Sumo Museum was opened in September 1954 to coincide with the completion of professional sumo’s new home, the Kuramae Kokugikan. Based on the materials gathered over the years by its first curator, Sakai Tadamasa, it was created to protect and preserve the rich historical heritage of Japan’s national sport. In January 1985 the museum moved to its present location when tournament sumo returned to Ryogoku with the opening of the Ryogoku Kokugikan expert-writers.net.

Activities

The major function of the museum is to gather and preserve a wide range of materials related to the history of sumo, from woodblock prints and banzuke (official listings of rank) to the ceremonial aprons worn by the great rikishi of the past. These items are then displayed in themed exhibitions held six times a year. The museum also functions as a research center, continuously studying and reviewing sumo history as an integral part of Japanese culture.

Museum Curator – Goro Ishiyama (as of February 2013)

Sarue Park

Sarue Koen Park, Kinshicho, Tokyo.

Sarue Park is a relaxing 14.5 hectare area of lawn, woods, garden, ponds and sporting and cultural facilities dating from 1932.

Sarue Park’s origins are in the 1730’s when it was developed as a lumberyard for lumber floated down the Yokojikken River, flowing along the park’s eastern side, into Edo (old Tokyo) for the construction projects of the then-ruling Bakufu administration. Sarue Park has been in its full-sized present form since 1983.

Sarue Park is divided north-south by Shin-Ohashi-dori Street. The northern section consists mainly of playgrounds for children and tennis courts.

The southern section consists of a baseball field and Tiara Koto, a large cultural and performance facility. It also has a pond with a waterfall.

Sarue Park has over 200 sakura blossom trees. It is directly south of Kinshicho Station.

Access to Kinshicho

Kinshicho is accessible by the JR Sobu line, and the Hanzomon subway line.

Kinshicho red light district

Behind Marui and the JRA are backstreets lined with small semi-outdoor eateries, often with a TV screen, where the horse racing gamblers take meal breaks and watch the results while they eat and talk. This area is where the love hotel and hostess club district begins.
